제주 기메 힐링 머그컵

제주기메의 문양을 현대적으로 재해석하고 이를 활용하여 일상의 소품으로 제작한 머그컵 시리즈 입니다.

Context.

제주기메힐링머그컵은 워크샵을 통해 직접 꾸미는 시간을 가졌으며, 흑색 머그컵에 따뜻한 물을 부으면 흰 바탕으로 변하며 ‘제주 기메’ 무늬가 아름답게 피어나는 특별한 머그컵입니다.

‘기메’는 제주 전통종이예술로 백지를 정성껏 접고 오려 무늬를 만드는 무구(巫具)로, 바람 많은 제주도에서는 신들이 바람을 타고 다닌다 여기는데, 하얗게 나부끼는 기메는 신神 그 자체이자 신과 인간을 연결해주는 창문으로 여겨졌습니다.

꽃기메, 초롱기메, 전지기메, 혼령기 등 일만 팔천 제주의 신들 만큼 다양하고 독창적인 무늬가 있습니다.

인스피어에서는 소중한 전통문화임에도 제주 심방(제주 만신)들의 구전에 의존해 간신히 명맥을 이어오고 있다는 사실이 안타까워 이 아름다운 문양과 가치를 더 널리 알리기 위하여 현대적으로 패턴화하고, 일상 속에서 행복과 안녕을 기원할 수 있는 아이템으로 활용해보고자 했습니다.

문양의 선정 및 제작에 있어서는 무형문화재 제주큰굿 전수자이자 제주큰굿보존회 회장인 서순실 심방의 자문을 받았습니다.

The “Jeju Gime Healing Mug Cup” is a special mug cup that allows you to personally decorate it during a workshop. When hot water is poured into the black mug, it transforms into a white background, revealing the beautiful “Jeju Gime” pattern.

“Gime” is a traditional paper art in Jeju, where a blank sheet of paper is carefully folded and cut to create intricate patterns. In windy Jeju Island, it is believed that the gods ride on the wind. The translucent gime was considered a window that connects the divine and human realms.

There are various and unique patterns of gime, such as flower gime, lantern gime, paper money gime, and spirit gime, reflecting the diverse gods of Jeju Island.

Inspired by the precious traditional culture, Inspire has modernized and patternized this beautiful design to promote its value more widely. Despite the reliance on oral tradition among the Jeju shamans, it is regrettable that this valuable cultural heritage has barely survived. Therefore, we aimed to utilize this item as a means to wish for happiness and peace in daily life.

We received guidance on the selection and production of the pattern from Seo Sun-sil, the President of Jeju Keun Gut Preservation Society and the inheritor of Jeju Keun Gut, which is designated as an intangible cultural heritage.
